Hygiene in Barbershop

Why Workplace Hygiene Is Essential for Every Barber

A clean barbershop isn’t just about appearances — it’s about protecting your clients, your reputation, and your business. Proper hygiene practices help prevent the spread of bacteria, infections, and cross-contamination, while also creating a comfortable and professional environment that clients can trust. Below are essential hygiene practices every barber should follow.

1. Disinfecting Tools with Barbercide

BARBICIDE® disinfecting liquid is a staple in professional barbershops and should be used correctly at all times. Tools such as scissors, combs, and straight razors should be fully submerged in a glass jar filled with properly mixed Barbercide solution after each client.

It’s important to frequently replace the liquid inside the jar, as the used solution can lose effectiveness over time. Clean, fresh disinfectant ensures harmful bacteria and viruses are eliminated, keeping tools safe for every client.

2. Using Clipper Spray for Electrical Tools

Electrical clippers and shavers such as WAHL® require special care due to their internal components. Submerging them in liquid disinfectants is not safe or practical. Instead, barbers should use professional clipper sprays such as Clippercide®.

These sprays are specifically designed to:

  • Disinfect and sterilise clipper blades

  • Lubricate moving parts

  • Prevent rust on the metal rotary components

Using a clipper spray between clients helps extend the life of your equipment while maintaining high hygiene standards.

3. UV Sterilisation Units for Fast Disinfection

UV sterilisation units such as SANTOR are an excellent addition to any modern barbershop. These small appliances use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and contamination on tools within approximately 20 minutes.

They have minimal running costs, requiring only a low-energy UV light, and are ideal for quickly disinfecting tools such as combs, scissors, and razors. UV units provide an efficient, chemical-free way to achieve fast and reliable disinfection.

4. Disposable Hygiene Essentials

Single-use items play a major role in preventing cross-contamination. Barbers should always use:

  • Disposable gloves when appropriate

  • Elastic neck paper for every client

  • Disposable towels instead of reusing fabric ones

These items ensure a clean barrier between clients and reduce the risk of bacterial transfer.

5. Daily Washing of Gowns and Towels

Reusable items such as gowns, capes, and cotton towels should be washed daily. Even if they appear clean, fabric can hold hair, skin particles, oils, and bacteria. Regular washing keeps the barbershop smelling fresh, looking professional, and feeling comfortable for clients.
